Town Bonnyville Looking Into Establishing GIS Unit of Local Police

The town of Bonnyville has expressed some initial interest in establishing a General Investigative Services Unit in town to tackle drug crimes in the municipality.

The idea stems from talks between Mayor Gene Sobolewksi and Staff Sargent Luis Gandolfi. The proposal will see the town pay for two new officers at about 312,000 dollars a year and the RCMP detachment reassign one of their existing officers to the new unit.  The new unit should free up other officers to spend more time on non-drug related crimes. The unit would be based in Bonnyville, but would also have reach into the MD and other areas.

Council has passed a decision to get the ball rolling in the very early stages. The process is a very long one and the town hasn’t made any commitments set in stone yet.
