Bonnyville RCMP S/Sgt. Sarah Parke wants to remind The Lakeland to take the time on the road and avoid speeding.
Recently an Alberta RCMP Traffic officer in Cochrane stopped a white Porsche traveling towards them at an extremely high speed on Hwy 1 near Hermitage Road in Rocky View County. The Porsche was recorded traveling at 270 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone.Â
S/Sgt. Sarah Parke says according to Alberta Transportation, more than half of all fatal collisions involving unsafe speeds occur in rural areas such as Bonnyville. In 2021, there were 70,5801 recorded speeding offenses in Alberta RCMP jurisdiction, with RCMP officers charging 913 motorists with Excessive Speeds (traveling more than 50 km/h over the posted limit).
“It is easy to find yourself speeding unconsciously but it is important to stay focused and stay at or under the speed limit. Using cruise control can help someone maintain that safe speed, especially on rural roads. Speeding can increase collisions and only gets more dangerous in the wintertime.”
The speed limits on the road are determined the way they are based on what is the safe speed to travel at. This number is found through data from Alberta transportation. The Porsche traveling at 270 km would require two Canadian football fields or over 330 meters to come to a complete stop.
S/Sgt. Sarah Parke says anything over the speed limit puts not only that driver at risk but everyone else using the roadway near that driver at risk. “It is important to respect the rules and respect the roads and respect your fellow drivers.”
