Crime is being reduced including in the Lakeland. That’s what mounties had to say as the RCMP released a mid-year report card on their crime reduction strategies. In a press conference Deputy Commissioner Todd Shean, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP and others say that property crime in the province has gone down 17 percent. Mounties also say they’ve seen a 25 percent reduction in rural property crime between this year and last year.
Cold Lake RCMP Staff Sergeant Jeremie Landrie says the crimes in the statistics are ones that Lakeland residents know.
“Those crime types include your break-and-enters, your theft of motor vehicles, theft over $5000, possession of stolen property.”
Mountie bosses also commended the work of the new District – Level Crime Reduction Units. The Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit has seen action in the Lakeland. Landrie says teaming up with the unit has brought more than a few criminals to justice.
“We’ve had a lot of significant success with them. One, for example, is when the two murder suspects were located on the Cold Lake First Nation from a homicide just north of Edmonton.”
Landrie says remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity is key to keeping the numbers on the downward spiral.
“The saying goes ‘It takes a community to raise a child.’ Well, it takes the whole community to police the community.”
