Friendship Centre Gets 5K Donation Thanks to BCHS Students

The Bonnyville Native Friendship Centre got a big boost late last month from a 5,000 dollar donation from Bonnyville Centralized High School’s Youth Philanthropy Initiative.

24 groups of students researched a local charity and made a presentation to a panel of judges on why they felt theirs deserved the money. The group representing the Friendship Centre came in first.

Executive Director for the Centre Pauline Mawer says the money will go towards their Community Kitchen, which is open to anyone. She adds the funds should keep it running for a month. She’s also very impressed with how much work the grade 9 girls who worked on the bid put into their project.

“They got stats, they got numbers, they did these graphs. The graphs that they used are something we’ll be able to use in our own reporting.

“They wanted to know how the centre works, the services we provide and how we help. And then they won us five thousand dollars.”

The Centre also recently received a significant donation from the MD of Bonnyville’s Staff Christmas Party, which went a long way as well.
