Mounties prepared to make an impact on roads this long weekend

Mounties in the Lakeland and across the province will be taking to the streets this long weekend. The Thanksgiving break marks the start of “Operation Impact 2019” for the RCMP.

Bonnyville Staff Sergeant Sarah Parke says the operation is part safe driving awareness and part enforcement.

“The members here will be out over the weekend focusing on infractions ranging from provincial offences like speeding, seat belts, distracted driving up to criminal code offences like impaired driving and dangerous driving.”

The Alberta RCMP says last year on the Thanksgiving long weekend there were 410 accidents province-wide resulting in over 50 injuries and 3 deaths. Parke says those numbers can be brought way down with remembering some common-sense driving tips.

“Pay attention to other motorists around you in case someone else isn’t paying attention. If you’re driving defensively you could still avoid a potential collision that could be the fault of someone else.”

“Operation Impact 2019” is organized every year by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
