30 years for Glendon Derby this weekend

Another edition of the Glendon Derby is set to smash and crash its way into the Lakeland this weekend. The derby is celebrating its 30th anniversary on August 10th. Glendon AG Society President Stacey Sandmeyer says the milestone is the result of support from a number of residents.

“It’s a big deal for Glendon to put an event on of this size. It takes a lot of volunteers, a lot of sponsors. We’ve always been supported very, very well in this region.”

This year will feature the usual car and truck demolition derby as well as mudbog trucks. Different for 2019 will be a licensed grounds which means drinks can be enjoyed from any seat.

Sandmeyer says a ceremony during a break in the action will help highlight both the Cotton and March families, who were instrumental in helping the derby go from vision to reality back 30 years ago.

“It’s just to show our appreciation for all they’ve done to start something like this and have that vision. It’s to bring it home and be supportive. They’ve always participated or their families have. It’s just nice to give them a big thank you.”

The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 8 AM along with other events including a parade in Glendon. The derby grounds are due to be open at 11. More information on the Glendon Derby is at their official Facebook page.
