Cold ones in the park? Bonnyville council mulls over liquor consumption

Are liquor consumption laws when it comes to Town of Bonnyville parks worth loosening? That was the topic of discussion inside Bonnyville Town Council Tuesday evening. Council was presented with a letter from new Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs Kaycee Madu on the idea of easing up when it comes to drinking in municipal-run parks. Councillor Ray Prevost says he was initially confused by the request.

“I’m reading more into it then what there is here, but I can’t just see somebody walking across by our place here with a can of beer.”

Just before the May long weekend, the Alberta government announced that drinking would be allowed in provincial parks like Garner Lake and Jarvis Bay. Councillor Brian McEvoy says a decision like this would need going over with law enforcement members.

“[We’ll talk to] People with a lot more knowledge on the Liquor Control Acts to make a recommendation to us on relaxing the laws.”

The idea will go to the Bonnyville Police Committee for advice and recommendation before it comes back to council.
