MD hopes crackdown on construction zones solves problems

The Municipal District of Bonnyville is hoping a July crackdown on bad driving is going to change habits from now on. The MD discussed construction zone driving infractions in their last council meeting. Reports from the Department of Public Safety say what got their attention was complaints from construction flag persons.

Director of Public Safety Chris Garner says public safety offices received many calls over the summer about unsafe driving.

“During the summer construction, we did have issues with vehicles trying to drive down roads that had been closed. We also had issues with drivers obeying flag people.”

The Lessard bridge has been one site of issues says the MD. The bridge has been closed since the spring after the melt caused damaged to its piles.

Garner says some common sense is need when it comes to barricades and driving through work zones.

“Where there’s a barricade and it says ‘road closed’. Don’t move the barricade and drive down it. Where’s there’s a flag person with a sign, please stop.”

Garner hopes tickets handed out over the summer months have driven the point home.
