“We’re ready for it” : Cold Lake Mayor happy with bylaws in place for pot legislation

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland is happy with the work done so far when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. Cold Lake City council recently passed the final reading of its land use bylaw for potential marijuana shop owners. The passing of the bylaw allows any potential future distributors to start the application process with the City.

“Now we have a set of rules and policies in place. The person wanting to get into the business now can do so. They’ll just have to wait until it’s legal.”

The wait time is getting smaller every day. Bill C-45, or the Cannabis Act, is now before the Senate and ready to be finally voted on. Mayor Copeland says when it gets the ok from the feds, Cold Lake will be ready and prepared to play a part in the new industry.

“There was a hard date of July 1st but what we’re hearing it could be back in the fall. The city of Cold Lake is definitely ready.”

The bill will be voted on tomorrow by the Senate. The federal government had set Canada day 2018 as the goal for legal marijuana use. The Liberals have backtracked a tad, now saying that it might not come until August or early Septemeber.
