Vilna declares State of Local Emergency after melt turns to flooding

Many communities around the Lakeland are experiencing some flooding issues due to a late snowfall and warm temperatures. The village of Vilna is no exception, and yesterday afternoon residents were told that a local state of emergency had been declared due to the warm-up.

Mayor Leo Chapdelaine says the water has cause some fields and roads to be washed out.

“A large run-off, it caused some flooding. No residences were flooded, as far as basements and that.”

For now, the village has asked residents to limit their use of water until further notice, and wait for the local government to give word of a return back to normal. Mayor Chapdelaine says he can’t give a time on when the state will be lifted.

“Right now we’re pumping water, maintaining the flood levels and doing what we can to maintain the flood levels as we speak.”

Chapdelaine expects the status of emergency to stay on for at least the next few days, with weather being a factor on how fast the water will dry up.
