WSHL eyes Cold Lake for expansion

Cold Lake could be the home of the next Western States Hockey League team. The city says it’s been told the league is looking to expand into Canada, creating a new Western Provinces Hockey League for the 2018-2019 season.

Mayor Craig Copeland says the WSHL is considering bringing in Junior A Tier-2 level teams to six to eight communities in western Canada, and Cold Lake is among them.

“We have been approached by some people who are part of this proposed expansion. We are supportive of any organization who wants to call Cold Lake home and will work with them to help them see their plans become a success.”

Before any teams can be finalized, the city understands an ownership structure needs to be set up with internal partners. Copeland adds a new league could create partnership opportunities for existing sports associations, the Cold Lake Junior B Ice and local players.
