Hockey legends Hayley Wickenheiser and Lanny McDonald and TSN broadcaster Gord Miller were at 4 Wing today as Canadian Tire Donated 4,500 dollars worth of sporting equipment and gift cards to the base.
The donation is part of a 300,000 dollar commitment the company has made over three years to the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services, with donations being made to every base in the country. Students from Art Smith Aviation Academy got the day off from school to participate in some jumpstart games in the blue rink of the JJ Parr Sports Centre.
Gord Miller stressed that physical activity should be encouraged in all the forms it can take. “I think the biggest message for the kids is that you don’t have to be competitive in sports. It doesn’t have to be playing on a team and competing at a high level. Just being active, getting out and getting moving is such a great way of life. It can be a part of your life forever. You can be active and fit forever without ever playing a sport. It can just be walking to school instead of getting a ride, or going for a bike ride with the family, or going to the park and playing in the park with your friends instead of being on your devices. It’s all a part of fitness and activity that’s really important for kids and for all of us really.”
