Stepping Stones marks November as Family Violence Prevention month

Stepping Stones Crisis Society is recognizing November as Family Violence Prevention month, highlighting the importance of awareness, intervention, and community support for those impacted by family violence.

According to Statistic Canada, more than 139,000 Canadians were victims of police-reported family violence in 2023. “Women and girls continue to be disproportionately affected. In 2023 they represented about two- thirds of family violence victims,” reads the release from Stepping Stones Crisis Society.

Stepping Stones says family violence is part of a cycle, often beginning quietly, escalates over time and can repeat across generations unless someone intervenes. “Our role is to be that intervention point: providing support, resources and a safe place for women and families to begin healing and break free,” reads the release.

The organizations message for November: You Can Help

Recognize the signs. Family violence can include physical harm, threats, harassment, emotional abuse, neglect and control. Many victims do not come forward, and the police-reported numbers reflect only a portion of the full reality.

Know where to turn. Whether you are seeking help for yourself or supporting someone else, Stepping Stones is here to help. We offer confidential counselling, safe referrals, educational workshops and community navigation to help families rebuild.

Speak up if you see something. Violence in the home can affect children, seniors, partners and extended family members. If you suspect someone is at risk, you can call our 24-hour helpline at 780-594-3353, contact local authorities, or reach out to trusted supports. Your intervention may disrupt the cycle before it escalates.

Stop the cycle. Breaking the cycle means intervening today so there is a safer future for women and children experiencing family violence.

“When one person speaks up, it creates a ripple effect that can change everything,” said Melissa Francis, CEO of Stepping Stone Crisis Society. “Family violence thrives in silence, but when we act, listen, believe, and support, we open the door for safety, healing and hope.”

A Candlelight Vigil and Walk of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the new Stepping Stones facility to honour victims and survivor of family violence, all are welcomed. Those unable to attend can participate by placing a lit candle in their window that evening in remembrance and solidarity.

If you or someone you know is experiencing family or intimate-partner violence, please contact Stepping Stones at 780-594-5095 or SteppingStonesSociety.ca or visit the facility in person at 5305 47 Street in Cold Lake.
