Telephone Scams Reported in Bonnyville

he Bonnyville RCMP are reporting on a couple new scams in the Lakeland.

A few residents have received calls from someone claiming to be from the Canadian Powerball Lottery Company. In order to claim their winnings, the person must transfer funds to them through Western Union. There is no Canadian version of America’s Powerball Lottery and the RCMP state that no reputable organization operates in such a manner.

The second scam is a call from someone claiming to either be from the Canada Revenue Agency or an RCMP Officer calling on their behalf. Potential victims are told to mail cash to an address. The RCMP does not act as a debt collector for the CRA and the real agency notifies people with overdue balances through the mail.

Approach any calls of such nature with extreme skepticism. If you believe you are a victim of these scams contact your local RCMP detachment.
