An investigation is underway after a man died while in police custody in St. Paul.
According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), St. Paul RCMP responded to a call regarding an “unwanted individual” on the evening of March 18 and “found an intoxicated man”. He was arrested and placed in a cell at approximately 9:30 p.m.
The following morning, at 10:25 a.m., officers found the man unresponsive in his cell. “Life-saving measures were attempted by police and emergency medical services, but he was declared deceased a short time later,” read the information from ASIRT.
“ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct,” ASIRT stated.
ASIRT is now investigation the circumstances surrounding the man’s custody and care. No further details will be released as the investigation is ongoing.
