Iron Horse Trail staging areas could see upgrades with new grant application

Staging areas along Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail may receive significant upgrades if a grant application support by the city of Cold Lake is approved.

During its December 10 meeting Cold Lake city council voted in favor of backing a grant application submitted by the Village of Horseshoe Bay under the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) Program.

The application aims to secure funding for the design of staging areas along the 300 kilometer Iron Horse Trail, which is a multi-use recreation corridor connecting several northeastern Alberta communities, including Waskatenau, Smoky Lake, St. Paul, Heinsburg, Elk Point, Bonnyville, Beaver River Trestle, and Ardmore. The trail, initiated in June of 2003, is part of the Trans Canada Trail and the Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail system, offering year-round activities.

CAO Kevin Nagoya detailed the request, noting that it originated from North East Muni-Corr Ltd., with Horseshoe Bay leading the application. “This is a request from MuniCorp Limited to provide a letter of support for a grant application that is being prepared by the Village of Horseshoe Bay,” Nagoya explained, adding that the grant focuses on design improvements for specific staging areas.

Council motioned to authorize the city of Cold Lake to provide a letter of support, emphasizing a commitment to regional collaboration and the development of recreation infrastructure across northeastern Alberta.
