The transformation of Lakeshore Drive in Cold Lake is set to advance into its next phase of construction, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts.
Earlier this year, Knelsen Sand and Gravel was awarded the contract for Phase 1B of the Lakeshore Drive Infrastructure Improvement Project at a cost of approximately $12.7 million. Work in this phase is expected to begin this summer, with the primary focus on essential infrastructure upgrades, including the replacement of water and sewer lines, as well as the paving of Lakeshore Drive from 7 Avenue to 10 Street.
Phase 1A, which began in the fall of 2023, saw the installation of sheet piles designed as a retaining wall and water break to prevent land erosion beneath Lakeshore Drive. This phase is anticipated to reach completion early this summer.
“Work on Lakeshore Drive has been moving at a great pace. It’s getting very exciting as we move closer to the project’s completion,” remarked Mayor Craig Copeland. “Residents who have been waiting years to see this stretch of road upgraded are even more excited. I know they will be very impressed with the final product, as will the rest of the city.”
Initiated in 2019, the Lakeshore Drive Infrastructure Improvement Project aims to upgrade utilities, road surfaces, and the slope along the lakeside. The improvements also seek to create a scenic corridor linking Kinosoo Beach and the Cold Lake Marina. Construction has been ongoing since last fall, with crews braving winter conditions to complete the installation of the sheet pile wall.
Most of the work for Phase 1B is expected to be finished within this year, while the landscaping of the linear parkway is scheduled for completion in the 2025 construction season.
