Kehewin Looking Into New Waterline

Kehewin Cree Nation is exploring the possibility of building their own waterline.

The community is currently on a boil water advisory and is looking at new, cleaner sources.

Council has discussed joining Bonnyville and Cold Lake in their water line project, but feel it would be best to get their own source from Kehewin Lake.

The First Nation met with a representative from the Federal Government last year on this subject. Whether or not the project would fall under federal or provincial jurisdiction however, became an unclear issue that complicated matters. An estimated cost for the plant and which level of government would pay for it remained unresolved. However, Kehewin was informed that it would be their call  as to where they would draw water from, either the regional line or Kehewin Lake. Having decided on that, council is now waiting on approval of funding.
