Council discusses costly issue of graffiti on Lakeshore Drive

At their latest meeting, members of Cold Lake City Council discussed concerns about graffiti, particularly along the Lakeshore Drive seawall.

Officials said concerns were brought to the City about the graffiti painted along the wall, close to the shoreline. As of Monday, Nov. 2, 18 graffiti locations have been identified, including three new spots reported during remediation efforts.

“Spray paint is difficult to remove from the raw steel,” said Cold Lake Mayor Bob Mattice.

“We have to paint over the graffiti, which is proving to be time-consuming, costly, and detract from the aesthetics of the wall.”

Officials said staff have worked to paint over the graffiti, but more pieces continued to appear, resulting in the City having to order more paint supplies before remediation efforts can continue.

“Graffiti on the seawall is heart-breaking to see,” said Mattice.

“The whole area is meant to be a place to enjoy beautiful views of the lake and surrounding nature. This graffiti detracts from the City’s efforts to enhance the lakeshore as a recreational and tourism destination.”

The City noted that between paint, supplies and labour, the estimated price tag to remediate the seawall is over $2,500 and could rise if the graffiti issue continues.

Residents are asked to be on the lookout for anyone spray painting or committing other acts of vandalism, and to report these cases to municipal enforcement at 780-594-1345.
