Alberta’s police oversight organization has released new details about a fatal RCMP officer-involved shooting near Cold Lake that remains under investigation.
According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, RCMP responded to a rural property shortly before 5 p.m. on June 25 after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man had assaulted a woman and threatened to kill her dog. Police were also told a loaded firearm was present at the property.
ASIRT said the first officers secured the area and used a drone to monitor the man while attempting to contact him. Members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators later arrived and spent several hours trying to persuade the man to surrender.
Investigators said officers believed the man was approaching a vehicle with a loaded firearm and might attempt to leave the property. Police then moved to prevent him from leaving.
During the confrontation, ASIRT said at least one RCMP officer fired a service weapon, striking the man. He died at the scene.
ASIRT said the information released reflects what investigators know at this stage of the investigation. The agency said both investigations remain ongoing and no additional information is being released.
