A promise to survivors Stepping Stones opens new trauma informed facility in Cold Lake

Stepping Stones Crisis Society has officially opened its new 50,000 square-foot trauma-informed facility on Saturday, September 6.

The grand opening began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at 5305 47 Street, followed by an open house and an evening soirée at the Cold Lake Agriculture Society.

The facility brings all Stepping Stones programs under one roof, including emergency shelter, second stage housing and outreach services. The facility expands capacity from 27 to 63 emergency beds and from 7 to 12 second stage units.

“This project is built on hope, compassion and the unshakable belief that every woman and child deserves a safe place to land,” said Melissa Francis, CEO of Stepping Stones Crisis Society. “For years, we have carried the heartbreak of turning people away simply because there was no space. Now, those calls for help will be met with open doors, open arms, and a place where survivors are met with dignity, safety, and understanding. This building is not just bricks and mortar-it is a promise to every survivor that they matter, they are seen, and they have a community ready to walk beside them as they heal and rebuild.”

“This Facility exists because of the generosity and vision of so many,” said Francis.

The project was funded by the Government of Canada through CMHC, with contributions from the city of Cold Lake, M.D. of Bonnyville, Cenovus Energy, Strathcona Resources, Women’s Shelters Canada, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and multiple community members, local businesses, volunteers and dedicated staff of Stepping Stones.

“From government partners to local businesses, from donors to volunteers, each contribution has shaped this space into more than just a shelter. We have created a space where healing begins the moment you walk though the door. We have created a space where healing begins the moment you walk through the door. This building is not only a safe haven in a time of crisis; it is a place of renewal where women and children can rediscover their strength, reclaim their futures and know they are never alone.”
