Lac La Biche RCMP say suspected kidnapping was a prank, warn against copycats

Lac La Biche RCMP are reminding residents about the danger of pranks after a suspected kidnapping in front of the Island View Apartment Complex on August 14 that turned out to be a prank.

“RCMP were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle in front of the Island View Apartment Complex (intersection of 103 street and 104 avenue),” reads the August 15 RCMP release. “The vehicle, described as a dark coloured and dirty cubic SUV, possibly a Kia Soul, was involved in what appeared to be a kidnapping that took place in front of the apartment complex.”

Officers asked if anyone had footage or information to come forward. However, RCMP say both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle have come forward. “The driver of the vehicle, as well as the potential victim, have contacted the Detachment to inform them that there was no abduction,” reads the update RCMP release. “As per their report, the passenger was pretending to be abducted by the driver.”

Lac La Biche RCMP thanked the public for reporting the incident noting the quick information allowed them to respond and deploy the resources fast that would have been crucial in an abduction case.

“Furthermore, RCMP reminds the public that these kind of practical jokes can cause panic in the public or even lower the chance of people calling the incident in, believing it is just another prank.”
