No Avian flu cases in the M.D. but residents are urged to avoid contact with wild birds

The M.D. of Bonnyville’s Agricultural Services Department is warning residents not to handle wild birds after Avian Influenza was confirmed as the cause of death in Canadian Geese found along Jessie Lake.

No cases were reported in the M.D. but officials are warning that the virus, that affects waterfowl, can spread to domestic poultry.

“In general, members of the public should avoid handling live or dead wild birds. If handling can’t be avoided, wear disposable gloves, place a plastic bag over your hand before picking up the dead bird, or shuffle the dead bird into a box or container without touching it (for example, use a stick to move the bird). Wash your hands with soap and water and disinfect any surfaces that have come into contact with dead birds using alcohol, diluted bleach, or commercial disinfectants,” reads the release.

Anyone who notices clusters of dead waterfowl, raptors, corvids, or gulls should report them by calling 310-0000 then 780-427-3448.

Symptoms in birds can include head tremors and limp neck, while domestic poultry may show signs of swelling under the eyes, reduced egg production, or sudden high mortality.
