The M.D. of Bonnyville will not be included in the province’s emergency strychnine program for gopher control.
The Government of Alberta recently approved emergency use of strychnine in selected areas, but the M.D. was not part of the approved region. The decision was share during an April 2 town hall with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation.
Officials say the Pest Management Regulatory Agency required the province to limit where strychnine could be used, and municipalities on the edge of the boreal forest, were excluded.
“We understand the concerns this decision causes our local producers,” said General Manager of Environmental and Protective Services Matt Janz. “Both Council and Agricultural Services will continue to advocate on behalf of our farming community through providing local data and information to support future inclusion in the program.”
The M.D. says it will share any updates on their website and social media.
