UPDATE – All charges against a Smoky Lake man accused in March of firearm and property offences have been withdrawn.
RCMP had charged 25-year-old Gregory Huk following a search warrant at a rural property on March 19, where officers said they seized a pickup truck, other stolen property and more than 30 firearms.
Court records show the charges, which included possession of stolen property and unauthorized possession of a firearm, were withdrawn on Aug. 21, 2025.
The original RCMP investigation was launched in response to a rise in property crime in the county.
Original story
RCMP say they have recovered stolen items and seized more than 30 firearms as part of an investigation that began earlier this month.
Police said the investigation started March 19 in response to an increase in property crimes in the County of Smoky Lake.
Officers allege they tracked stolen property to a farmyard and executed a search warrant, recovering a 2013 Skidoo, a trailer, a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck and about 35 firearms.
Sgt. Anita Doktor, detachment commander in Smoky Lake, told reporters March 25 that property crime has been rising, particularly at seasonal or unoccupied homes.
“Tackling these crimes remains a priority,” Doktor said. “We also collaborate with surrounding detachments to share information.”
RCMP encouraged residents to take preventive measures, such as installing security cameras, improving outdoor lighting and reviewing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design resources.
Police said the investigation confirmed the 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck had been reported stolen in Fort Saskatchewan.
RCMP said a 25-year-old Smoky Lake resident, Gregory Huk, has been charged with possession of stolen property, careless storage of a firearm, possession of prohibited weapons and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Huk was remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in Boyle provincial court March 25. None of the charges have been proven in court.
