RCMP seize stolen property over 30 firearms in Smoky Lake investigation

Smoky Lake RCMP have seized multiple stolen items and more than 30 firearms following an investigation that utilized various techniques including a bait trap.

According to RCMP, the investigation began on March 19 in response to a rise in property crimes within the County of Smoky Lake. Officers tracked stolen property to a farmyard in the area and executed a search warrant, recovering a 2013 Skidoo, a trailer, a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck and approximately 35 firearms.

Speaking to the media on March 25, Smoky Lake RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Anita Doktor acknowledged a recent rise in property crimes, particularly targeting seasonal or unoccupied properties. She emphasized that tackling these crimes remains a priority and noted that RCMP collaborate with surrounding detachments to share information.

RCMP are encouraging residents to take crime prevention measures, such as installing security cameras and improving outdoor lighting. They also offer Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design resources for those interested.

The investigation confirmed that one of the items was stolen from outside the area, the 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck was stolen from Fort Saskatchewan.

As a result of the investigation, Gregory Huk a 25-year-old Smoky Lake resident, has been charged with possession of stolen property, careless storage of a firearm, possession of prohibited weapons, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Huk was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in court in Boyle on March 25.
