As winter temperatures increased in January, Bonnyville RCMP launched Operation Cold Start, an initiative aimed at reducing the theft of idling vehicles.
The annual campaign focuses on working with the public to prevent crimes of opportunity that occur when vehicles are left running, unlocked, and unattended.
In 2024, the Bonnyville RCMP investigated 171 stolen vehicle reports, with approximately 50 percent of those vehicles having keys left inside. These incidents not only caused inconvenience for vehicle owners and occupied police resources, but also led to greater risks to community safety, as stolen vehicles are often used to commit additional crimes or given to unknowing buyers.
Operation Cold Start ran from January 20 to January 24, with officers performing various checks to help keep vehicles safe. Officers checked unattended idling vehicles to ensure they were properly secured and that keys were not left inside. Officers also took part in public education efforts by sharing crime prevention tips through local media and distributing pamphlets left on idling vehicles.
During the five day operation, Bonnyville RCMP checked over 155 vehicles, handed out 95 pamphlets, and interacted with 38 vehicle owners.
In an additional effort to prevent vehicle thefts, Staff Sgt. Sarah Parke is giving away free steering wheel locks, known as “Clubs” while supplies last. “There are a handful left which will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone driving a vehicle that would benefit from the Club. Just come on down to the detachment and ask for one.”
