The Municipal District of Bonnyville council has approved an $8,000 donation to support the Ronald McDonald House Winterland Invitational Hockey tournament.
The decision, made during the December 10 council meeting, came after a heartfelt discussion about the organization’s impact and the tournament’s significance to the community.
Oreen Skiba, the provincial event senior manager for Ronald McDonald House Charities, had visited the council on November 26th to share the importance of their programs.
She described the Ronald McDonald House as a “home away from home” for families traveling to access medical care for seriously ill children, emphasizing that nearly 70 percent of families served live outside cities with children’s hospitals. Skiba explained how the charity reduces financial and emotional barriers for families at a critical time, highlighting the profound local impact of their work.
During the council meeting, several members expressed strong support for the organization. Reeve Barry Kalinski shared a personal connection, mentioning that coun. Don Slipchuk’s daughter was among the first beneficiaries of the Ronald McDonald House. He underscored the value of the organization, noting, “We’re so thankful for Ronald McDonals House, and we have living proof in our area that it really matters.”
Coun. Darcy Skarsen also endorsed the initiative, reflecting on his children’s participation in the Winterland Invitational and describing the Ronald McDonald House as an easy cause to support wholeheartedly.
Parks and Recreation Manager, Greg Sheppard, spoke about the economic benefits of the Winterland Invitational, which attracts families to the Lakeland region. Initially. the administration recommended a $2,000 sponsorship due to constraints in the 2024 giving budget. However, the council’s discussion led to increased support for the cause. Coun. Don Slipchuk highlighted the dual role of the tournament in helping local families and boosting the regional economy.
In light of these factors, Coun. Josh Crick withdrew the original $2,000 motion, and Coun. Fadeyiw proposed allocating $8,000 from the 2025 council giving operation budget. This motion passed unanimously.
The donation will go toward the January 2025 Winterland Invitational, furthering the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities to assist families in need.
