Elk Point RCMP make significant drug seizure following arrest in Frog Lake

On December 12, Elk Point RCMP made a notable drug seizure during a patrol on Frog Lake First Nation.

Around 12:30 p.m., officers attempted a traffic stop with a stolen utility terrain vehicle (UTV). The driver attempted to evade police but surrendered after a brief pursuit and was taken into custody without further incident.

A subsequent search of the UTV and its driver uncovered a substantial quantity of illicit substances and evidence of drug trafficking. 188 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 10 grams of suspected cocaine, 10 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 10 grams of suspected fentanyl, a quantity of Canadian currency, and other drug trafficking paraphernalia.

James Kuzyk, a 40-year-old Edmonton resident, faces multiple charges, including, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Kuzyk was released on $500 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Paul on January 9, 2025.

“This is a significant seizure of drugs that will not be sold in the communities we serve.  The Elk Point RCMP will continue to arrest and charge anyone involved in the drug trade. Removing drugs from the streets will assist in protecting public health and safety, reducing crime rates and preventing substance abuse,” stated Staff Sergeant Stephen Nolan.

He also extended gratitude to the Frog Lake Security Team and emergency services for their role in locating the stolen UTV. “Partnerships with local emergency services are vital to creating a safer community,” he added.

The Elk Point RCMP encourages the community to report property crimes or provide information about criminal activity. Residents can contact the Elk Point RCMP directly at 780-724-3964, or anonymously through Crime Stopper at 1-800-222-8477.
