As December marks the beginning of a season filled with celebrations and travel, the RCMP is encouraging residents to take proactive steps to secure their homes while they are away.
Whether you’re traveling to a destination or to visit a loved one, unoccupied property can be an easy target for theft or damage.
Bonnyville Detachment Commander S/Sgt. Parke emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, “Make your trip memorable for all the right reasons. Follow these tips to help keep your home secure while you’re away.”
To create the illusion of occupancy, consider using timers on lights, TVs, or radios to give the impression that someone is home. Arrange for someone to pick up your mail and newspapers, and if snow is expected ensure your driveway and walkway are cleared.
Securing all entry points is crucial. Lock all doors and windows, including those on upper floors and garage access points. Smart locks with remote monitoring capabilities can offer an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Be cautious with social media, avoid posting real-time updates about your travel plans, as this can alert potential thieves to your absence.
Installing security measures such as motion-activated outdoor lighting and a home security system with cameras can be an effective deterrent. Many modern systems also provide motion detection and instant notifications, allowing you to monitor your property remotely.
If you’re leaving for an extended period, enlist the help of a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home, or consider hiring a house sitter. Address potential household risks before leaving, shutting off your water supply or leaving a tap dripping can help prevent frozen pipes. Unplugging non-essential electronics can reduce the risk of fires or damage caused by power surges.
