Freezing rain warning issued for the Lakeland region

Drivers are being advised of possible hazardous conditions with a freezing rain warning being issued for the Lakeland region.

Environment Canada says the freezing rain began this morning in the Peace River and Grand Prairie area and is expected to move eastward, reaching Cold Lake late Monday afternoon.

The freezing rain is expected to impact communities across the Lakeland including Bonnyville, M.D. of Bonnyville, Cold Lake, St. Paul, the county of St. Paul, and Elk Point.

The freezing rain is expected taper off by Tuesday morning in Cold Lake.

Fort McMurray will be near the northern boundary of the freezing rain band, with Highway 63 south experiencing freezing rain Monday night. Fort McMurray itself is likely to see predominantly snow.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Drivers are being urged to slow down while driving in slippery conditions and watch for taillights ahead of you, while maintaining a safe following distance.
