New K-12 school for Mallaig included in Alberta education plan

Among the proposed new school builds announced by the provincial government last week is a K-12 school for Mallaig, located approximately 30 km northwest of St. Paul.

The design phase for the new École Mallaig School has been in progress for over a year. In March 2022, St. Paul Education received approval for design funding for the project. The new school is set to be built on the same land where the current school sits, with plans for a facility to accommodate 320 students.

“There is no time to lose in getting our school construction accelerator program off the ground right now,” Premier Smith said during the announcement. “To accelerate school construction immediately, our cabinet has just approved full construction funding for new school projects, but we need all hands-on deck to begin construction on many more school before the end of this school year.”

Smith also emphasized the need for collaboration between school boards, municipalities, and the Ministry of Education to ensure priority school sites are ready for construction without delay.

In addition to Mallaig, other communities included in the list of new school projects are Calgary, Edmonton, Barrhead, Breton, Redcliff, Taber, and Wainwright.

St. Paul Education had previously agreed in May 2021 that, if a new school were built in Mallaig, it would be designed for 320 students, down from the original plan of 350. The announcement marks a significant step toward making the long-awaited new school a reality for the Mallaig community.
