During the August 13 city of Cold Lake council meetings, council members reviewed and approved two funding requests, lending financial support to both a local professional association and a neighboring community’s fire department.
The first request came from the APEGA Lakeland Branch, which organized its 2024 Golf Tournament at the Grand Centre & Country Club on August 16th. The annual event, according to the city of Cold Lake’s agenda, is designed to raise awareness of the Alberta Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Association within the Lakeland region and to provide a valuable networking opportunity for local professionals.
Mayor Craig Copeland expressed his support for the event saying, “I purchased four entries into the tournament. And the funds came from ‘Council Goodwill.’ I would throw in some swag in there for their door prizes.” The motion was passed unanimously, with the council approving $125 each for four entries, along with an additional $250 for a prize package.
The second request came from the Village of Pierceland, Saskatchewan, seeking Cold Lake’s support for their upcoming golf tournament on September 7th. The proceeds from the tournament will go towards the Pierceland Volunteer Fire Department, assisting them in purchasing essential equipment such as fire suits and tanks.
Councillor Bob Mattice, who brought the motion forward last year, highlighted the positive impact of Cold Lake’s previous donation. “I put this motion forth last year, and they said they were surprised that we gave such a great donation. They were not expecting the $500, they just wanted some welfare. So, if we felt thrifty, we could just donate prizes to them.”
Ultimately, the council decided to maintain the same level of support as the previous year, approving a $500 donation for the 2024 Pierceland Golf Tournament.
