Town of Bonnyville and MD support Treaty 1-11 gathering

On July 9, the MD of Bonnyville approved a $2,000 donation towards the Treat 1-11 gathering hosted by Cold Lake First Nations, while the town of Bonnyville approved a $2,500 donation to cover an Elders lunch event. The City of Cold Lake had previously agreed to a $10,000 donation.

The Treaty 1-11 gathering, scheduled for August 26-30 at the English Bay treaty grounds, is an educational conference celebrating heritage through ceremonies, discussions, and cultural activities. Rick Janvier, a Cold Lake First Nations representative highlighted the importance of understanding treaties as spiritual covenants and guides for coexistence between nations. He emphasized the relevance of treaties to all Canadians, noting that they are living agreements rooted in reciprocity, respect, and renewal principles.

Janvier pointed out the benefits of the gathering for the surrounding communities, including fostering cultural appreciation, strengthening social ties, and promoting unity and collaboration. He also stressed the importance of youth engagement in nurturing future leaders who are informed and proud of their cultural identity.

With an expected attendance of around 10,000 people, event coordinator Emmy Plante noted the potential economic boost for the local area. Janvier secured a $75,000 grant from Travel Alberta to support the event, with a focus on advancing tourism potential, particularly in the Indigenous communities of northeast Alberta.

Before the town of Bonnyville approved funding for the Elders lunch, Mayor Elisa Brosseau expressed support, highlighting the importance of sharing meals in bringing people together. During the Bonnyville MD meeting, Councillor Josh Crick suggested the event should be federally funded, while Councillor Don Slipchuck and Reeve Berry Kalinski supported making a donation. Councillor Ben Fadeyjiw noted the positive economic impact of the event, particularly for Bonnyville accommodations, leading to the MD council approving a $2,000 donation.
