At the June 11th regular council meeting, the city of Cold Lake council reviewed several funding requests for upcoming community events.
One highlighted event was the Ronald McDonald House Charities 10th Annual Golf Charity Classic, held on June 15th at the Cold Lake Golf and Winter Club. Mayor Craig Copeland expressed interest in participating, and Councillor Adele Richardson supported the idea, calling it a wonderful organization. The council approved a $600 entry fee for a team, with funds allocated from the Council Goodwill budget.
The council also discussed a request from Lac La Biche County to participate in the 2024 Healthier Communities Golf Tournament. This event, scheduled for July 4 at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club, is a collaboration between Lac La Biche County, Portage College, and the Lac La Biche Regional Health Foundation. Registration for a team of four is $1,4000. The tournament aims to showcase the region’s scenic beauty and raise funds for community health initiatives.
Mayor Copeland showed interest in the event, and Councillor Bob Mattice proposed a motion. The council approved a $350 sponsorship for individual members who decided to attend.
The final discussion centered around the Tate at the Lake – Open Farm Days Long Table Dinner, set for August 17 at the Cold Lake Marina Breakwall. CAO Kevin Nagoya mentioned that no funding request had been received for this event, with ticket prices ranging from $165 to $245. Only 120 seats are available, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit a community organization to be determined later.
Councillor Chris Vinning opposed using taxpayer money for the event, suggesting that individuals purchase their tickets. The council decided not to purchase tickets collectively, leaving attendance up to individual members.
