New principal to lead Elk Point Elementary School for 2024–25 school year

Elk Point Elementary School will welcome a new principal as the new school year commences in September, following a decision by current principal Leanne Vinge to pursue other career opportunities after dedicating 15 years, including 12 as an administrator, to the school.

In the school’s April newsletter, Vinge expressed gratitude for her time at Elk Point Elementary, stating, “EPE will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am grateful that i have had the opportunity to be a part of your children’s lives.”

St. Paul Education announced on April 26 that Garth Finlay has been appointed as the principal of Elk Point Elementary School for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Originally hailing from southern Alberta, Finlay’s education journey began at the University of Lethbridge, where he earned his Bachelor of Management followed by his Bachelor of Education.

With a teaching career spanning over a decade, Finlay brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He started his teaching career at Grand Prairie Regional College in 2006 before joining Ecole Mallaig School in 2015, where he taught Grades 5 and 6. In 2021, he transitioned to assistant principal at Ecole St. Paul Elementary School while also teaching upper elementary students.

Married and a father of two, Finlay is deeply involved in his community, volunteering as a baseball coach and serving as a member of St. Paul Friends of Library. An avid golfer and curler, Finlay is excited to embark on this new chapter in his career. Regarding his appointment, he expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I look forwards to supporting an already close and vibrant school community while developing meaningful connections and working collaboratively towards the shared goal of guiding students toward academic and life success.”

Superintendent of Schools Peter Barron praised Finlay’s recent experience as an assistant principal in St. Paul, affirming that he is “well-positioned to lead Elk Point Elementary School towards continued success in providing exceptional education and fostering a supportive learning environment for their students.” With Finlay at the helm, Elk Point Elementary School looks forward to a bright and successful future.
