Canadian Forces announce winter training exercise Northern Grizzly in Cold Lake

The 41 Canadian Brigade Group will conduct exercise Northern Grizzly at CFB Cold Lake from January 26th to the 28th. This comprehensive training program will involve military exercises and helicopter operations, primarily featuring CH-146 Griffon helicopters, in various areas, including the Dog walking area, commonly known as Bark Park.

As part of this initiative, the dog walking area situated north of CFB Cold Lake on the road to the Cadet Camp, will be temporarily closed during the specified period for safety reasons. The helicopters used in the exercise can generate significant wind and throw objects, requiring extra caution for the public. It is essential for individuals to adhere to safety guidelines, maintain a safe distance, and follow instructions when the area is active for helicopter operations.

Exercise Northern Grizzly is designed to focus on winter force protection, aiming to enhance the Canadian Armed Forces response to emergencies, particularly in challenging Arctic conditions. The CH-146 Griffon helicopters will play a central role, engaging in base rescue, casualty evacuation, and search and rescue operations.

Residents in the vicinity are advised to be vigilant regarding increased CH-146 Griffon helicopter flights during the exercise, primarily in CFB Cold Lake’s training areas and daylight hours. Despite efforts to minimize disruptions, the heightened air traffic is crucial for maintaining operational readiness in harsh winter environments.

The cooperation and understanding of the public during this temporary closure are appreciated. For any questions or concerns, please contact 4 Wing Operations at 780-840-8000.
