As of January 01, 2024, Cold Lake RCMP announces an increase in the property damage motor vehicle collision reporting threshold from $2000 to $5000 combined damage.
To assist citizens in understanding their obligations following a motor vehicle collision in the New Year, Cold Lake RCMP provides the following guidelines:
1. Check for Injuries:
– Assess yourself, passengers, and other vehicle occupants for injuries.
– If medical help is needed, call 911 for an ambulance.
2. Capture Details:
– If an ambulance isn’t required, take quick pictures of the vehicles.
– Move the vehicles to a safe location if drivable and inform the other driver to meet there.
– If vehicles are not drivable and blocking traffic, contact RCMP at 780-594-3301 or 911.
3. Exchange Information:
– In a safe location, capture the other driver’s license, registration, and insurance details.
– Ensure the other driver does the same and exchange phone numbers.
– You can leave once this is done without police attendance.
4. Insurance Contact:
– Contact your insurance company to report the collision.
– Follow their instructions on towing, obtaining damage estimates, and repair procedures.
5. Estimate Assessment:
– If the estimate is under $5000, call the other driver to check if combined damage exceeds $5000.
– If the estimate is over $5000, report to RCMP at 780-594-3302.
It is crucial to report the collision to the police only if one or more of the following occurs:
– Injury is involved.
– Either driver fails to exchange information or drives away before exchanging info (Hit & Run).
– The combined damage amount of all vehicles and property is over $5000.
Cold Lake RCMP emphasizes the importance of adhering to these guidelines to ensure proper reporting and handling of motor vehicle collisions based on the updated threshold.
