The City of Cold Lake has added its first two Electric Vehicles to its Fleet through a new pilot project.
Made possible by the Municipal Climate Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program, a collaboration of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta, the initiative aims to assess the viability of EV integration within the city’s operations.
“We are thankful for the opportunity to test this technology and learn how it will work in our climate and how it can be integrated in our fleet,” expressed Mayor Craig Copeland. “We’ve seen how other communities have used electric vehicles and we’ve heard many opinions, but it’s time for our organization to see EVs in action and learn first-hand how they perform here.”
The Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program, funded by the Government of Alberta, facilitated the City’s acquisition of a 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 for just over $60,000, with a program rebate of $14,000. Additionally, a 2023 John Deere TE Electric Gator was purchased for almost $26,500, receiving a program rebate of $7,937.42.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been designated for use in the Municipal Enforcement fleet, while the John Deere Gator will serve the Parks department for various maintenance tasks. Including park, trail, and cemetery upkeep, as well as indoor use for event set-up and tear-down.
