Cyr’s Bill On Nonconsensual Photo Sharing Passes

Bonnyville-Cold Lake MLA Scott Cyr’s Bill 202 – The Protecting Victims of Non-Consensual Distribution of Intimate Images Act– has passed its third reading in the legislature and will be making its way into the provincial law books.

The bill is  meant to more clearly define a victim’s right to sue when risque pictures of themselves are shared online without their consent. It’s also intended to give school boards more authority to discipline students who do so.

“I thank all Members of the Legislature for supporting this important initiative, which supports victims and makes our communities safer,” said Cyr in a statement.

“In an increasingly technological world, measures like Bill 202 are incredibly important to ensure that victims are empowered.

“When Bill 202 comes into force, there will be greater understanding of the dangers of sharing intimate images, and greater protections for victims.”
