Cold Lake Penguins Looking For Coaches, Players

Taking up a  new sport can be a very rewarding endeavor. Along with the usual suspects of hockey and baseball, there’s a great opportunity to get into rugby in Cold Lake as well.

The Cold Lake Penguins RFC are looking for coaches and athletes to join their club for the upcoming season. “Rugby is a great sport for many reasons, but is most readily recognized for its culture,” explains President Dave Brown. “Where else can will you find a contact sport that competes with such aggression, and at the end of the game, sets the ball down and picks up a beer with the opposing players. Likewise, how many sports can you have 30 players on the field at once, and only 1 referee?”

The team plays in the 3rd division of the Edmonton Rugby Union, which Brown says is roughly equivalent to Beer League hockey in that it’s mainly for fun. “We are starting our preseason fitness conditioning starting Jan 29th  from 8:30 – 10 pm at the Cold Lake High School,” adds Brown. “We have a professional trainer, Brenden Barton from Motion in Sync, donating his time for these sessions. It is free, co-ed and open to anyone over 18  who wants to get exposed to the sport. Currently, anyone who is interested in learning more about our club or current events can find us on Facebook Cold lake Penguins RFC.”

The season officially begins in May with 12 games through the season, 6 home and 6 away. Away games are mostly in Edmonton.
