Bonnyville, Rest of the World Waiting and Seeing on Trump Presidency

Bonnyville, like everywhere else is not exactly sure what will happen under a Donald Trump presidency and is waiting until inauguration day.

Among the promises the President-Elect has made though, include backing out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and re-negotiating NAFTA. Executive Director of the Bonnyville & District Chamber of Commerce, Andrea Yaremie says it’s tough to say exactly what the next four years will bring to Canada and the Lakeland. “There are so many factors that are going to be considered. It’s definitely something that is going to affect Canada and Canadian businesses… At this point in time, I haven’t seen it been confirmed that Trump is going to pull out. There’s been a threat that he’s going to pull out of TPP. Whether that’s going to happen or not, it’s probably likely. Is it concerning? Yes. But at this point it’s too soon to comment what that’s going to mean for Canadian businesses.”

Though most of Trump’s protectionist talk has been aimed at Mexico, Canada will no doubt find its relationship with the States changed. In addition to trade deals, Trump has said he’d like to see the Keystone XL pipeline built. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he looks forward to working with the new president.
