With hunting season in full swing across Alberta, St. Paul RCMP is reminding hunters to prioritize safety while navigating Alberta’s outdoors.
Following key precautions, hunters can ensure their safety as well as the safety of other outdoorsmen and woman sharing the natural environment.
The RCMP emphasizes the importance of securing firearms at all times, whether during transport or in the field. Firearms should always be unloaded when not in use and stored in a locked case or secured with a trigger lock. Hunters are also advised to inspect their equipment before heading out to confirm it is in safe working conditions.
To prevent theft or misuse, firearms should never be left unattended in vehicles or public places. Properly securing firearms during transport and storage is critical for maintaining safety.
Hunters are encouraged to avoid high-traffic areas and clearly marked trails where non-hunters might also be present. Wearing bright or high-visibility clothing, such as orange, is essential to ensure visibility and reduce the risk of accidents.
The RCMP also stressed the importance of preparedness. Hunters should carry a first aid kit and a fully charged phone or another communication device. Informing someone of their hunting location and expected return time is another key safety measure.
Hunters should ensure they have all necessary licenses, tags, and permits, and adhere to hunting season start and end dates as set by local authorities. Respecting designated zones and protected wildlife areas is also vital to maintaining a safe and lawful hunting experience.
