Local officials rally support for stranded Bonnyville Reeve amid Haiti unrest

The ongoing turmoil in Haiti has left Barry Kalinski, Reeve of the M.D. of Bonnyville, stranded at an orphanage as street gangs wreak havoc in the capital, Port-au-Prince.  

Kalinski, renowned for his unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts, finds himself among numerous Canadians stranded on the island amidst the chaos. The dire situation prompted the group to share their ordeal on CNN, shedding light on the gravity of the crisis as gangs tighten their grip on the capital.

In response to Kalinski’s predicament, local Canadian officials have mobilized efforts to secure his safe return. Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs, though unreachable for direct comment, has conveyed a steadfast commitment to coordinating assistance for Kalinski and others affected by the unrest through her office.  

Similarly, Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr has pledged unwavering support for Kalinski’s repatriation efforts, expressing profound admiration for the Reeve’s humanitarian endeavors. Cyr emphasized Kalinski’s selflessness and bravery in prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community despite perilous circumstances. 

While international matters like these primarily fall under federal jurisdiction, local officials actively facilitate support and assistance. Should Kalinski or his family seek aid, MLA Scott Cyr affirmed his commitment to providing comprehensive support through his constituency office.  

Kalinski’s prolonged stay in Haiti underscores humanitarian workers’ challenges in conflict-ridden regions. Nevertheless, his dedication to uplifting communities and improving lives amid adversity inspires admiration and solidarity from both local and international spheres.  

As efforts persist to ensure Kalinski’s safe return, the Bonnyville community united in extending prayers and support for his well-being and hat of all individuals affected by the crisis in Haiti.
