Some Alberta drivers have automatically exited the Graduated Driver Licence program and are fully licensed with a Class 5.
As of Monday, June 26, the Government of Alberta has automatically graduated drivers 18 and over if they meet the qualifications. Drivers who have completed a 24-month driving period with no suspensions or demerits within the last year will receive a letter notifying them of the change in their driver’s licence status to non-GDL. Drivers with demerits or suspensions will not have graduated yet.
The drivers who have graduated do not need to get a new license card and can wait until the current one expires. Police in Alberta will know if a license driver has graduated through information from the Canadian Police Information Centre.
If drivers are traveling outside of Alberta, they need to keep their letter with them in their vehicle or visit a registry and update their physical license, as law enforcement agencies outside Alberta may not have access to Alberta’s data.
Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors says Alberta’s government will continue to make common-sense rules and make life more affordable for Albertans.
“GDL was an expensive, duplicative licensing scheme that discriminated against good young drivers. There are 500,000 young Albertans with clean driving records who would need to pay $154 and waste their time to take another driving test.”
This choice will save Alberta drivers the $154 cost to exit the GDL program. The Alberta government made this promise in April.
