As summer rolls around Alberta RCMP are reminding residents who have off-highway vehicles (OHV) like quads, dirt bikes and side-by-sides to safely store and lock them up to help prevent theft.Â
According to RCMP, “the more difficult you make it for thieves, the less likely they are to take what’s not theirs.”Â
Some tips RCMP recommend to help keep recreational vehicles safe is to not leave keys in or near the vehicle when left unattended, store in a locked garage or shed, park larger vehicles in front to block any OHV from being moved easily, use a lock and chain to secure if outside, cover with a tarp, leave outdoor lights on, if OHV are being stored for longer periods of time, deflate the tires, or empty the gas tank, make sure to always keep track of serial numbers and have up to date photos, and install a GPS tracking system.Â
RCMP are also reminding the public that if there is a fire ban, OHV are not to be used due to the exhaust heating up to high temperatures causing debris falling to heat up and possibly smoulder, which may ignite and create a wildfire.Â
