Lakeland hit with poor air quality by Environment Canada

The Lakeland has been issued a special air quality statement saying wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility at times.

The statement was issued Thursday, June 1st at 10:49 a.m.

The amount of smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.

Environment Canada says wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Everyone is asked to take action to protect their health and reduce exposure to smoke.

“People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.”

Environment Canada recommends everyone monitor themselves for shortness of breath, wheezing, severe cough, dizziness, or chest pains and asks people to stay inside if they are feeling unwell and experiencing the previous symptoms.

“Take a break from the smoke by temporarily relocating or finding a location in your community with clean, cool air such as a library, shopping mall or community centre.”

Environment Canada asks anyone whose condition is not improving to contact their healthcare provider.
