November is Family Violence Prevention month in Alberta. The issue of domestic abuse is still a very real one in society today, even here in the Lakeland.
The Dr. Margret Savage Crisis Centre in Cold Lake reports that it has so far held 125 women and 117 children escaping violent homes or homelessness this year. The stress of tough economic times in the area has likely contributed to an uptick in traffic to the centre in recent months.
A rough economy is only one part of the issue though, Resource Development Co-ordinator Serina Parsons describes domestic violence as a cycle that is often passed from generation to generation. Nipping it at the bud with at risk children is one of their goals. She also says those who are victims aren’t always obvious. it can even be someone next door.
The centre is hosting several events to raise awareness for family violence this month, including a candlelight vigil on the 23rd and a Walk for Peace on the 13th.
