Late tax bill will see monthly penalty now

Late taxes in the Town of Bonnyville will be penalized differently from now on. Bonnyville town council voted in their meeting Tuesday evening to change out the existing bylaw, which penalizes late taxes with a 12% fee.

The new rules will see that tardy tariffs receive a 2% penalty added every month the taxes are late from July to December. The hope is that a lesser monthly penalty will be easier to pay than a large flat fee and encourage the tax bill to get squared away.

The town says 299 accounts currently sit with unpaid taxes totalling just over $380,000.
