Mounties seize 50 guns, ammo after Sparrow Close incident

Cold Lake police are saying they seized close to 50 guns after an incident in the north of the city. Mounties were in the Sparrow Close neighbourhood early Monday after a firearms complaint forced the evacuation of some homes in the neighbourhood.

The RCMP says the day began when they received reports of shots being fired near the Marina. Mounties say they found shell casings and live ammunition when they arrived.

Other calls to police were made about a man driving around and disturbing homes before fleeing. Mounties figured out who the suspect was and conducted a search warrant on a home where the guns and ammunition were found.

The suspect later turned himself in. 29-year-old Christopher Starchuk is now facing charges including reckless discharge of a firearm. He’s due in Cold Lake Provincial Court on July 24th.

“I would like to thank our local media and the public for their cooperation and on-going assistance in this investigation,” said Sergeant Ryan Howrish, Cold Lake RCMP. “Our officers were able to bring this to a successful conclusion and nobody was hurt.”
